Atha Yoga-Anushasanam

WITH LIVE MUSIC.

Now this is yoga as I have perceived it in the natural world.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (PYS 1.1)

Anyone who is engaged in serious yoga practice has come to yoga for the same reason—we’re fed up! That means we’ve had enough.

Atha means “now.” But it’s more than just “now”; it means now in terms of “hereafter,” or “going forward.” The importance of that nuance is that it implies that whatever has been happening will now, hereafter, be different. So in his first sutra, Patanjali is speaking directly to those of us who are fed up with things as they are. Everyone has a different story about the shape that being fed up takes for them—a miserable job, a life on drugs, a troubled relationship, etc. But fundamentally it’s the same for everyone who comes to yoga—at a certain point in life we take inventory of how much is really great and how much is suffering, and we come to the conclusion that it’s mostly suffering—even if the suffering is relatively mild, like “things are fine but I know there’s more to life.” Most people are not there; they’re not quite willing to let go of the old model. Some even like their suffering and identify with it. They’re not at that point where they’re fed up enough to say, “okay, what else is there? I’ll search high and low to get it.” But for those who are, Patanjali grabs us and says, “you’re ready to hear this stuff.” That’s the good news of that first word atha.

The word shasanam can be understood as a set of rules, a discipline applied to us from the outside, a set of instructions for what we’re supposed to do next. But when we put the word anu, which literally means “atom,” in front of it, it means the instructions or ways to act that come from the inside. For example—“I’m thirsty, so I’ll go get a drink of water.” It’s that simple: we don’t think of it as a rule that when you’re thirsty you have to go drink water, or when you’re hungry you eat, we just do it. In this sutra, Patanjali is telling us that yoga is one of these things that comes naturally. It flows from us, through us, and basically if we could just get out of the way, then it would be free to manifest in our lives. And that’s the practice of yoga—the practice of getting out of the way.

Of course it’s very difficult to let go of the parts of us that disable the natural flow of wisdom and purity, because they’ve become enculturated and neuroticized. They are the ways we cope with the world, our No. 1 defenses: they are how hard we’ve got it and how impenetrable our problems are. But Patanjali is saying that these are the parts of us that are unnatural, that have been inflicted upon us, and we could take them off like we take off a set of clothes. But it’s not so easy. One hundred percent of what restricts us is in our minds and has been concretized in our bodies in different ways. So yoga practice is meant to point out to us where that energy is stuck, whether in our minds, our shoulders or our hips. In this way, yoga is often referred to as a discipline. But it’s important to understand that it’s not the kind of discipline that’s forced on us from the outside, or in the case of teachers, it’s not a discipline that we’re forcing on others. It’s a discipline that’s naturally arising. As we move through our difficulties in the practice, whatever they are, we understand that the encounter with difficulty is a blessed moment and an opportunity. It is not a fail, but a chance to reflect on what separates us from each other, the nature of suffering in our lives, the role that prejudices and fixations play in our lives, etc., and just let them go. It can happen very quickly, in just an instant, but it can also take some time; it’s not easy to shed a carefully constructed armor. The great teacher Dharma Mittra likes to say, “Get mad and do it!” Get fed up! But don’t do it because a teacher tells you to do it or because it’s a rule; do it for your own reasons, because you’re fed up with the way things have been and you want them to change. Do it because you want to do it. Do it to get rid of a cruel dictator—your identification with your mind. Do it as your personal revolution. Atha…

Shift your perception with a fun-filled exploration of vinyasa, inversions and arm-balances

One of the greatest challenges of the Ashtanga system is the vinyasa. In this 3 hour workshop, we will break the vinyasa down into its basic components.  These are “the laws of flight.” Students will explore techniques for creating greater lightness, feather like flow and efficiency of practice while using less effort to achieve greater ease.

The class will also explore the elements of inversions and arm-balances. It is common to feel intimidated or even frightened by balancing on our hands. But lets let the freedom of Yoga help us move beyond these issues and offer techniques and practical methods of approach to allow for greater confidence to help us apply deep within to our personal practice.  This will all be done through the avenue of insightful and simple methods that Tina has learnt through the Ashtanga and Jivamukti methods.

There will be partner work as well as individual techniques offered. There will be a lot of laughter and fun as well as some wonderful information from Tina's own experiences.  All levels may attend even if you have never done a handstand before. Alternatives are always given.

Open to all levels and physical conditions.

JIVAMUKTI WEEKEND WORKSHOP WITH TINA PASHUMATI

  • Saturday, June 16, 2018 11:00 AM
    Sunday, June 17, 2018 6:00 PM

The Well is thrilled to be hosting Tina Pashumati James from Whistler for a full weekend workshop on Bowen Island. The hours and focus for each day are outlined in detail below.

Vinyasa and Vayus

SATURDAY (5 HOURS)
11-2PM
4-6PM

This Jivamukti workshop emphasizes the importance of energetic alignment within movement; of intention, bandha, dristi, and of course, alignment with the breath itself. Learn about the Vayus, the winds or currents of life-force energy in the body that facilitate the circulation of prana throughout our entire being. Let go of your civilized self and welcome your wildness, your storms; you are part of nature, part of the Earth, a dynamic and self sustaining little system within the larger ecosphere.

Chakras and the Vision Quest

SUNDAY (5 HOURS)
11-2PM
4-6PM

The Chakras are portals through which we perceive reality. We will explore the attributes of each of these seven energetic wheels from the root to the crown utilizing mantra, asana and high intention. By energetically inhabiting each of these centers we are able to address our karmas and hone in on possible root causes of our emotional, mental and physical challenges. This practice will instigate healing and a change in perception to make way for discovering our true nature and will include both short lecture and asana practice.
A vision quest is a quest for the visions in anyone's life that will heal them and make them whole. In traditional first nations cultures young people were sent into nature to listen to the voices of the living earth. The elders taught them to do this to find their path in life and to find their power animal helpers. The person on the vision quest spent days in caves, on mountain tops, on rivers, in the desert, waiting, and inviting the voices to come to them. When they heard the voices and saw their vision, they would re- turn to their people and know who they were and what they were to do.
This workshop is open to all students, and will apply for credit towards your AYTT (500 Hour certi cation).

ABOUT MANJU PATTABHI JOIS

Manju Jois, Ashtanga Yoga guru from Mysore, South India, is the eldest son of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, recognized worldwide as the main authority in Ashtanga Yoga. Manju was born on November 16, 1944. At the age of 7, Manju was awakened every day by his father very early to begin the lessons that would forever change the course of his life and the lives of those who would study with him in the coming years. He began his teaching career at the age of 15 years with his father and has taught ever since.

Manju considers it a great honor to be the son of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. "He is my father and my teacher. I am very grateful to both my mother and my father. "Manju's mother, Savatri Jois, (Sathu for her family) was a beloved wife, loving mother and an expert in Indian cuisine. Manju is dedicated to his wife Nancy and his daughter Sathu, who is named after his paternal grandmother, born in 2002. Sathu is a young woman with many talents, who continues to bless the Jois family beyond measure.

Manju has taught the true Mysore Ashtanga method for over 47 years. Encompassing 22 countries and the 21 US states, the journey of teaching Ashtanga in the world through Manju is increasingly widespread. Manju is grateful to Gary Herlich and all the other people who helped Manju to stay in the United States when he began teaching in North America.

It offers weekend workshops of Ashtanga, classes for teachers and week-long training. It incorporates pranayama and Vedic chants in its classes, which go very well with the practice of Ashtanga yoga. Manju's intention is to teach on the path of Ancient Tradition and bring the many benefits of Ashtanga Yoga to its students.

His desire is to bring "better understanding and understanding" of Ashatanga yoga to his students in a world full of distractions. Manju's dedication to his life as a teacher and practitioner of yoga has brought the benefits of the ancient Ashtanga Yoga Manju tradition to many students around the world, by guiding each of them to "Unite with himself”.  Manju has been with Tina Pashumati James for 18 years and has been coming to her schools since 2002.
